Get To Know Marcel Thysman RMT
I always knew I wanted to help people for a living but it certainly took me a while to figure out what that would look like. Initially I wanted to go the counselling route so after graduating from high school, I enrolled in the University of Waterloo’s Psychology program. In second year, one of the classes I took was Psychopathology, a course that went over major mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. Midway through the term I realized that as a clinician, I could be in a situation where my client’s well being and in some cases, life would be my sole responsibility. At the age of 20, I didn’t think that was something I was ready for.
I finished the program and realized that I no longer had a career to work towards but had a mountain of student debt that needed to be paid off. So I took a job at a local insurance company. It paid the bills but I wasn’t exactly happy and certainly didn’t feel like I was helping people.
I remember working in the disability claims department, looking at a diagram of a shoulder girdle (shoulder blade, collar bone and humerus) and being fascinated by how the three worked together to allow movement. Later that month, while going through a particularly stressful time in my life, I had a massage for the first time in years. I remember that I could bring even an hour of peace to someone who needs it, that would be valuable, that would be a worthwhile career.
I kept the idea in the back of my mind but it wasn't until I saw an advertisement on the side of a bus for a local massage therapy school that I took the idea seriously. I signed up for the introductory weekend and after years of searching, found my passion. I quit my job and went back to school.
In addition to my training at the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy (CCMH), I have also taken courses in Fascial Shear Techniques, Cupping as well as working in a way that is Trauma Informed.
In my practice, I focus on deep tissue work, believing that there is a difference between something being uncomfortable but productive, and actually painful. I try to use enough pressure to challenge the muscle without bullying my way in. That being said, I recognize that our physical and mental states are intertwined; sometimes the best way to soothe an angry muscle is to calm the nervous system as a whole. I try to tailor my treatments to the needs of each individual who walks into my office. After all, every body is different.
